The Jensens have experienced insurmountable loss in the last year. The latest tragedy began to unravel when Emma, the youngest of three, was admitted to Akron General on February 4. What would later come to be two blood clots on her liver - Budd Chairi Syndrome diagnosis - a shunt - three day brain fog coming out of anesthesia - bi-weekly paracentesis to drain the fluid backup - an ultrasound confirmation the shunt wasn’t working - scheduled revision of the shunt - ultra-low blood pressure leading to moments of dizziness and confusion. Leading up to Wednesday, April 17 when Emma was rushed to the ER by the squad where she’d later experience cardiac arrest twice and remain in the Critical Care ICU.
The days that followed were emotional, confusing, exhausting. All the things you think it would be when facing such a delicate situation. The doctors’ messages were grim. Her life was “minute to minute.” She was “very unstable.” One a scale of 1-10 sick, “she was a 10+.”
It was determined Emma had two strokes on either side of her brain, among other internal complications, leaving her a life on machines. The family was forced to make a decision no family ever wants to face.
Emma will be an organ donor, giving life to so many. It feels like the “most Emma thing” that could come of this. While the spirit she was so well know for has left us mourning, her physical body will go on to live many beautiful lives.
The funds will be split between George and Sue, parents, and Tony and Katy, brother and sister in law.
