Help the homeless get through the COVID-19 crisis

What strange times these are and I know many people are feeling anxious and uneasy. Lots of us are worried about loved ones, but also about practicalities, work and paying the bills. But it's in times like these that we are reminded of what really matters, we prove that we are stronger together, and I believe that we will come out of this period with a new outlook on life.

Some of you will know that I have spoken in the past about some of the extraordinary homeless charities doing their best on our streets. It was a bitterly cold winter again, and they were there, night after night, helping the lost, the vulnerable and the sometimes forgotten. And now again, under difficult circumstances, they are trying to keep frontline and on the ground services going. Sadly the homeless are often the first ones overlooked when times are tough. A homeless man in Dublin city I speak to regularly and help out when I can, told me that with the offices closed, no one is walking past at the moment, everyone is staying away, and the few euro, hot drinks and food he was given daily by regular commuters has stopped. He said that things are worse than ever for him.

With this in mind, and knowing that many of you are at home at this time and thinking of positive things to do, I'd love your help to try and raise some money to divide between Merchants Quay Ireland (MQI) and Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH), two charities I have personal experience with, and have great admiration for. The ICHH don’t just work with the homeless on the streets, but also supply food and support to those in crisis – and there are so many more people looking for help during this awful time that they don’t know how long they can keep going for.

I know some of you aren't being paid at this time, and to those of you, a share would be great, but for anyone who is and is wondering of a sure fire way to help others, whatever you can give would be greatly appreciated. If everyone on my twitter feed gave the price of a coffee we would vastly exceed our goal.

I know we will all come through this awful period, and I hope we will look back on it and see that we got things right, and didn't overlook those who could so easily have been forgotten amidst the bedlam.

I will be personally withdrawing the funds to distribute to MQI and ICHH.

Thank you.
