Claire Harvey is an elementary PE teacher and an amazing wife to my brother Andy. Andy is a school counselor and part-time worship leader. They balance an incredibly busy life in which both she and my brother work multiple jobs to provide a good life for their three kids, Savannah, 9, Bruce, 6, and Henley, 2. When Claire started having debilitating headaches and vision loss in 2016, she was concerned. She was diagnosed with intracranial hypertension, an excess of fluid causing pressure on the areas surrounding her brain, specifically her optic nerve. It was recommended that she have brain surgery that would insert a ventriculoperitoneal shunt on her skull that would drain the fluid to her stomach. After about a year with the shunt, Claire's headaches returned, and it was determined that parts of shunt were malfunctioning, so in February of 2018, she had shunt revision surgery. After having a normal recovery, one night, her husband Andy noticed that he could see the shunt sticking out from her incision, and so back to the hospital they went. In another surgery in early April, bacteria and infection were found, so the entire shunt and tubing that drains to her stomach were removed and she was put on IV antibiotics and kept in the ICU. Finally, two days later, on the opposite side of her brain, a new shunt was inserted and new tubing run down to her stomach.
As a public school teacher, Claire only gets a certain number of days off and will be docked over $3000 from her remaining paychecks from now until August. Coupled with medical bills from three hospital stays, ER visits, and prescription costs, the Harvey family is facing a huge pile of medical debt. Having brain surgery is a big enough complication, but having it four times is something that no reasonably healthy person plans for.
This campaign aims to recover Claire and Andy's lost wages from their days off, as well as to help with paying off their medical debt. I hope you will consider donating to this campaign to support this sweet family in their time of need.
