Paying Tribute & Saying Goodbye to Derek

Dearest family & friends; I am heartbroken to come to you with the news that my little brother, Derek Fjeld, passed away last night, September 2nd, at his home, in Proctor, VT.

As most of you are likely aware, Derek was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer less than 5 months ago. During the time since his diagnosis, Derek was undergoing regular chemotherapy treatments, completing his last treatment in the past few weeks. He had just begun immunotherapy treatments last week. We all remained full of hope that Derek would make a full recovery.

We are very thankful to have had the time with Derek that we did since his diagnosis. He was very happy to receive many calls, messages & visits. The outpouring of love and support, from loved ones and his caring community was incredibly heartwarming & very much appreciated.

We were not prepared to have to say goodbye to him so soon; though I imagine that one is never ready for such a thing, no matter how much time you are blessed with. It was Derek’s wish to be cremated, which will occur this week. Our family plans to hold a celebration of life for Derek; details of which will be shared with you all once known.

I have created this GoFundMe in order to possibly help cover the cost of Derek’s cremation ($3000) and a gathering in his honor. I understand many of you have donated to help Derek & his family already, via a GoFundMe started by my mom, Carrie, after his diagnosis. Please know how grateful I am to you for doing so. We will announce the date for his celebration of life once we know it.
