The Digital Sisterhood is a startup that aims to unite Black Muslim Women globally by highlighting the importance in creating their own spaces.. Our goal is to counter the pre-existing narrative on what it means to be Black, Muslim and a Woman. Through digital storytelling, we hope to empower a generation of young women to unapologetically be themselves, as well as, inspire them to foster a strong and unwavering relationship with Allah Subannu wa ta’ala.
Who Are We?
The Digital Sisterhood is a team made up of Black Muslim Women content creators, digital artists, photographers, small business owners, poets, Black Muslim Women in tech, community leaders, Islamic students of Knowledge and many more.
Why?
For many years Islam was represented across popular culture in ways that were oblique: shadowy villains, arrogant oil-rich sheikhs, and veiled women. Some were not explicitly named as Muslim but could be interpreted as having ties to Islam by the way they were dressed and introduced. Despite how problematic these depictions are, Muslim audiences have at times embraced them and drawn close to these images. This willingness on the part of minorities to tolerate popular culture images that may insult, caricature, or demean them has gone wildly too acceptable. Representation does matter, even if audiences are not always conscious of this fact or cannot articulate why their sense of self is affected by these misleading portrayals.
TDS will also explore the ways in which how the intersectionality of Black Muslim Women often leaves them out of conversations. Despite popular belief, there isn't a singular definition in what it means to identify as a Black Muslim Woman, so our goal is to explore that question and display the different ways in which these woman are choosing to define it.
It's time we create more opportunities where Black Muslim women can reimagine and own their narratives.
Black Muslim Women are beautiful, versatile, influential, trailblazers, change makers, creative and gifted too. And it should be known, not for others but for ourselves.
And for the women tomorrow.
Why digital storytelling?
Digital storytelling uses videos, audios, and pictures to tell valuable stories in a unique way. The format of digital stories and the way they can be shared creates an emotional connection to the topic, inviting people to engage with a story and take action as a result. Digital storytelling can be an influential tool for social change.
TDS believes that it can inform and inspire action as well as encourage engagement with both their hearts and minds. The goal is to help the audience understand the current social/cultural/political issue that affects Muslim Women and to urge viewers to engage in proactive dialogues, explore self-reflection and be inspired to develop a strong relationship with Allah subhannu wa ta’ala.
