Tamra Benson is a junior in high school from the small town of Turner, Maine. She is a field hockey player, a Nordic skier, a distance runner for track and field, and a consistent high honors student at Leavitt Area High School. She loves to be outside and explore new places. Her hobbies include reading, writing, running, drawing, playing piano, and using her imagination. As a junior, she already wrote a novel and ran a full marathon. Her biggest dream is to explore Australia and the Great Barrier Reef, then write a story about her adventures there. She has two younger sisters, two cats, and four dogs.
What Happened
Tamra’s has been accepted into the USA Down Under Sports Track and Field Team based on her athletic performances in the 2017 Maine State track meet. She has been invited to fulfill her dream, and to represent her country and the state of Maine by competing with her Down Under Sports team (300 U.S. athletes) in a three day track meet in Queensland, Australia. The meet will take place in July of 2018, but before Tamra can compete, she needs to pay for the cost of the trip, and she needs your help!
Why It's Important
As long as Tamra can remember, she has longed to go to Australia. She always thought this dream was impossible, due to money being a constant struggle in her family. When she opened the letter from Down Under Sports, she thought it was too good to be true. It would be remarkable for her to go to Australia to do what she loves: explore, run, and fulfill her lifelong dream.
How You Can Help
If you want to help Tamra achieve her goal, there are many things you can do. How the Money Will Be Spent
Tamra is trying to raise $7,000 in all before May 15th. The price of competing in the Australian Track meet is $4,700, and this cost includes accommodation, 2 meals per day, a visit to an Australian wildlife sanctuary, and plane tickets to and from Australia from Los Angeles, California. What the price does not include is plane tickets to and from Los Angeles from Maine, a third daily meal, the cost of exploring the Great Barrier Reef, the cost of a passport, and money to spend while she is in Australia. All of these additional costs would add up to roughly $2,000. If you choose to help Tamra reach her goal, that is how your loving donations will be dispersed.
Prizes for Donations
If you donate, please contact Tamra or her mother, Lexie, via text or email, and include your full name, mailing address, phone number, and the amount you donated. If you do so, they will send "thank you tickets" to Down Under Sports, which will enter you into two drawings: 2 tickets for a 10 day trip to Australia, and 2 tickets for a 5 day cruise! To increase your chances of winning, you can donate more and receive more thank you tickets. Here's how it works:
$25-$49 = 1 thank you ticket
$50-$99 = 3 thank you tickets
$100-$299 = 6 thank you tickets
$300-$999 = 9 thank you tickets
