Dominick Lawrence was born on October 11, 2014. He was born two days late and took 22 hours to come into this world. He lives in Graham, NC with his Mommy (Ariana), Daddy (Jason), 3 month old brother Joey and two boxers Sully and Lucy.
Dominick loves to play almost anything you give him to play with. He is not much of a picky eater and sleeps in his big boy bed. He is funny, smart, sweet, loving and a joy to be around.
In August of 2017, we began to notice changes in Dominick's demeanor. He didn't want to play and he wasn't eating or sleeping well. After a few episodes of complaining of headaches and vomiting, he was diagnosed with a double ear infection. When the medicine didn't seem to help, we brought him back to the doctor. The pediatrician wanted Dominick to get a CT scan of his head. At this moment, I knew as a mother something wasn't right and I already felt it- something was seriously wrong. The emergency room doctor broke the news that the CT scan showed tumors in Dominick's brain. We were transferred to Duke Hospital a few hours later.
In his first few days in the hospital, Dominick endured more than most adults will endure in a lifetime. The pediatric oncology doctor diagnosed Dominick with neuroblastoma. There was a tumor found on Dominick's kidney, and the cancer spread to his bone marrow. Over the next 6 months Dominick will receive 6 cycles of chemotherapy. He will have to undergo surgery to remove the tumor, then do additional chemotherapy and antibody therapy treatments. The doctors anticipate all of this taking about a year to complete.
We feel in our hearts Dominick will be okay, and he will be back to that same toddler we once knew, but we are beginning a long journey to get him back. Everyday has been hard, but everyday is one day closer to being in remission. We are extremely thankful for the support from our families, friends the community. Please keep Dominick in your thoughts and prayers.
