You may know Steve Minns (aka Slim) from school, trucking, fishing, the Leongatha RSL, work, camping, travel. Wherever you met him i'm sure he left an impression. An easy going, selfless person who has always been a mate to everyone. Always happy to lend a hand or have a chat. He gives so much and never asks for anything in return.
In January 2020 Steve's life, and that of his family's, changed forever. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
As a lifelong truckie who had never been sick or in hospital the diagnosis came as a shock. Straight into hospital and 6 rounds of chemotherapy and everything was looking great. Until, 2 weeks after his last chemo, Steve found out that the cancer had spread to his brain and spine. With things going downhill fast Steve was admitted to The Alfred hospital where he still remains to this day, fighting everyday to beat the cancer that is stopping him live the life he wants.
Being the sole income earner and not being able to work for so long and not knowing when, or if, he will ever return to work things have become a struggle and its only going to get harder. Rent, food, bills, fuel, it all adds up.
Steve is such a special person to so many and he needs our help. Our aim is to provide financial relief to Steve and his wife Lee as they continue this journey.
With everything going on with Covid in Melbourne we have not been able to travel to the hospital to visit Steve, he has been home once for a very short time and we treasured the moments we had. Until restrictions ease further the only thing we can do from home is to help fundraise with the hope we can ease the financial and emotional burden from my mum and Steve. Then all focus can be on a strong recovery and the hope to return home by Christmas.
