As you know, I have been off the grid for awhile. I’m not the kind of person who likes to talk about my personal problems, but I am dealing with some serious health challenges.

On August 28th I had a major stroke. Fortunately, I was able to get to a Stroke Center within the 3 hour timeframe to receive the proper treatment.   Because of the good treatment I received, I don’t have any lasting neurological effects from the stroke. My mental acuity is good. However, my physical state is a different story. In the first few days after the stroke, I was unable to walk, and my right arm was compromised, but I was determined to turn things around. Through self-healing and physical therapy, I have regained the mobility of my right arm, but I am still unable to walk without a cane. Having a stroke is like being hit by a Mack Truck only worse.

Originally, I was determined to quickly get my health back to normal. However, even though I have made great strides, I underestimated my weakened condition, and the length of time it would require to regain my strength. My doctors have told me that the most important thing is getting enough rest to allow my body to heal, and that this kind of injury can take up to a year to heal. But I am determined to make a full recovery much more quickly, and the doctors are amazed at the progress I have achieved so far.

To say that I am devastated is a huge understatement, because in my present condition, I am unable to teach Wing Chun, an art I truly love and respect, and one that I have devoted my entire life to learning and sharing with others. However, whatever it takes, I plan to turn things around. I have already started practicing my forms again, albeit slowly. And I will figure out a way of getting back into teaching Wing Chun, as well as continuing with my healing work to help others.

Interestingly enough, some of the doctors I have taught over the years have encouraged me to teach Chi Sau to stroke victims. This idea has always appealed to me, but, ironically, now having had a stroke myself, I can identify more readily with the kinds of challenges that stroke victims face, which I now see as an opportunity to utilize Wing Chun to help others in a different capacity. A top neurologist has told me that the Wing Chun drills and Chi Sau do create new neural pathways to help repair damaged areas of the brain and to help with the healing process. Some of the therapists I have worked with recently were very enthusiastic about this idea, so it is something I will definitely explore in the future.

But right now I really do need to take the time to heal, which means I will have no income coming in. So I am humbled to ask, but I would appreciate any financial contributions that anyone would like to offer. If you feel you have benefited from my martial arts and healing knowledge, and/or my videos, articles, and posts, I would greatly appreciate it if you would like to contribute to my recovery. To this end, I am looking into launching a Go Fund Me page to make it easier to donate.

God bless you all for your help, kind words and support over the years.

Sincerely,
Sifu Alan Lamb
