Our mom has always been the first to help and the last to ask for help, but she needs help now.
Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a terrible syndrome that Sherry came down with on Jan 12, 2019. She checked into the hospital with pneumonia and after a terrifying 36 hours was completely paralyzed…unable to move anything but the occasional blink of her eyes and wiggle of her toes and on a ventilator to breathe. She has battled and beat leukemia, double femoral artery bypass surgeries, and a septic MRSA infection, and through all those battles (and associated financial burdens of more than $2,000 a month!) she has never asked for help. To say she is a fighter is an understatement.
After 5 weeks in the ICU, another 8 in an acute care facility, and recently moving to a rehab nursing facility, she is now able to nod and shake her head to answer yes/no questions and open her mouth. While these seem like such simple things they are HUGE accomplishments for her. This battle with GBS is going to be an extended one—months, maybe years long—and also a very expensive one. We need her to focus on the fight and we need help to support her in the fight. Even though she has insurance, and even had the foresight and financial commitment to have a secondary insurance, the medical bills coming in and continuing indefinitely will be debilitating. It would truly be cruel for her to beat this horrible illness only to lose her house and all her assets in the process to pay for the care.
