Please help Shawn fight for her life!
Shawn O'Hora lives in the Bluffton area and has been employed as the school social worker at Hilton Head Island High School for the past three years.
Shawn has leiomyosarcoma (LMS), a very rare and very aggressive cancer. She is struggling daily with this illness and the extensive related costs (medical, hospital, travel, meals, hotels) including numerous overnight expenses for appointments at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville and surgeries in Charleston. Shawn exhausted her workplace sick days allowance several months ago and subsequently lost her employer-provided health insurance when later terminated from employment. These greatly magnified her severe financial burden.
In 2014 Shawn had her gallbladder and several pre-cancerous lymph nodes removed. In 2016 she had a sizable malignant LMS tumor removed from her abdomen followed by months of radiation treatments. Last summer Shawn had a partial mastectomy and in December 2017 she had three large LMS tumors removed (again from her abdomen) during hernia repair surgery.
Although Shawn initially began six months of chemotherapeutic treatments, the LMS metastasized and additional tumors were discovered in her lungs and liver. Subsequently, she's undergoing alternative chemo infusions.
Additionally, Shawn is also being treated for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, acid reflux and restless leg syndrome.
Shawn has avoided seeking financial assistance from others but has now become overwhelmed, facing new, even more costly medical expenses along with new daily debilitating side effects. And like everyone else, she also has personal living expenses.
If you knew Shawn you would know she's an awesome educator, social worker and counselor, a giving person who would be most appreciative of any help, not someone who would want people to feel obligated to help her.
