Help Sergio's family recover from Everson flood

Sergio and his farmworker family of 10 were forced to evacuate their rental house in downtown Everson, WA on Monday due to the catastrophic flooding.

 

These are our friends and neighbors. We're asking for your support to get this family immediate temporary housing, and to cover losses from vehicles and items damaged or destroyed by the flood.

 

16-year old Sergio translates for the family, and has been handling difficult conversations with emergency responders and shelter workers (and me). He has been a truly inspirational friend, and has already navigated immense challenges during the pandemic alongside his family while also in school.

 

Sergio called 911 as floodwaters started flowing into the Main Street home. The entire family — Otilio (Sergio's dad), Alberta (his mom), Sergio (16), Javier (16), Octavio (10), Manuel (8), Emily (4), and Juan-Jesus (3 months old) as well as two farmworker friends living with them, Francisco and Irma — sheltered in place on the second story for nearly 12 hours, until emergency personnel were able to rescue them.

 

5 vehicles were left behind, presumed destroyed (see terrifying video). The entire main floor of the house flooded, and the family lost Otilio and Alberta's bed, furniture, mini fridge, food, clothing, shoes and more.

 

The family sheltered with Francisco and Irma at Everson Elementary on Monday night, and are now staying at Christ the King in Lynden. We are asking for immediate help covering relocation costs for a hotel, and to pay for transportation.

 

We would also like to cover a month of wages for each working adult, one month of rent, and a portion of the cost to replace each vehicle:

 

Wages: $5200/month total between three adults working outside the home

Rent: $1300/mo

Vehicle Replacement Fund: $23,500 ($4,700 toward the replacement of each vehicle)
