Help Save the Duncan Curling Club

Donation protected
On January 5th 2022, after a huge snowfall, curling was cancelled for the evening and morning leagues. When our icemaker entered the building the next morning he saw puddles on the ice. What we believed would be a simple seal replacement uncovered a compressor that needed extensive repairs and a chiller that was completely non-operational. Our club had to remove our melting ice, and shut down for the remainder of the 2021-2022 season.

For many, the Duncan Curling Club holds a special place in their heart, and their community. It is a place where many have gathered to “hurry hard” since opening its doors in February 1967. The Duncan Curling Club is a not for profit society, is member operated (membership of over 260 households) and is home to a wide range of curlers in age and in skill level. During the current pandemic the curling community has been able to find ways to safely compete and be active together which contributed to the overall mental health of every person who played at our club. Curlers and visitors have always been welcome to come and watch our leagues or events from our lounge with an operational bar and limited food service.

Curling is a lifetime sport that offers a great atmosphere of team and inclusion no matter how often you play and what level you strive to play at. We have seen in our communities across Canada that Curling Clubs are closing down and the sport we love is slowly losing it’s numbers, but we have resilience and hope that with the support from all of you we can remain on the map. Even our small club has produced champions. We are home to players that have gone to Provincials, Nationals and the Worlds and still players that are working to achieve these goals.

Our club needs to raise $125,000 to be operational by next season (September 2022) so we are reaching out to our community of friends, far and near, lovers of our sport, understanding that it will take a village to make this happen.

We are hoping that through donations, we can keep our club open for years to come and provide our ice plant with some much-needed repairs and maintenance to avoid future meltdowns (pun intended). As an added bonus, we have a private member who has offered to ‘Match’ donated funds. So if you give $50, they give $50, $200, they give $200….$500, they give $500. They want to keep giving and matching donations to a high amount. Please help us make this happen!

Thank you for your support and donation towards our club and our community here in the Cowichan Valley in British Columbia. Good Curling to you all!

Please note that no raffles, sweepstakes, giveaways or returns on investment are offered in exchange for any donations made to our GoFundMe. Susanne Grundison, head of the Fundraising Committee is Treasurer for these funds.
