Help Save a Queer and Trans Household

We are a household of 9 queer people, all of whom are transgender and nonbinary, in Berkeley, CA. Nearly all of us are UC Berkeley students and alumni, and most of us are siblings and alumni of Sigma Epsilon Omega, UC Berkeley’s only queer fraternity.
We are asking you to help us maintain our wonderful, vibrant household. For years, it has served as a place of community, laughter, and love for the siblings and friends of Sigma Epsilon Omega. This house is a rare and valuable space where queer and trans people can exist authentically as themselves. Maintaining the vibrancy of our queer community depends on being able to provide this space of freedom.
As university students and young adults, we have been hit especially hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of us are facing job insecurity and financial troubles. Additionally, our ability to find new housemates has been severely impacted by the pandemic. Our house typically has 13 occupants, but we have been scraping by with 9 people, which has caused additional financial burdens for us. As a result of these factors, we have faced significant difficulties in making rent and staying on top of household expenses, including critical repairs. On top of our monthly rent of $12,260, we have also had chronic troubles with rodents, water leaks, and our heating system over the last several months.
In normal times, this house is more than just a living space. It's a center of community building, solidarity, and philanthropy for the greater LGBTQ community at Berkeley. Its loss would be felt not just by those who live here currently, but the extended chosen family that calls it home.
