Help Sam Study Abroad!

Hi all,

Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising headquarters here on GoFundMe and for your consideration in supporting me. I am writing to ask for your help to participate in a language immersion program, traveling abroad to Spain in May.

The rundown:

As many of you may or may not know, I began taking classes at Piedmont Virginia Community College during my senior year of high school and enrolled full-time as a college freshman that autumn, a year and a half ago. Attending PVCC has opened many doors for me, and has allowed me to advance my passion for academia beyond simply learning how to achieve and maintain straight A’s. I’ve also had the chance to join the Honors Program, the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society and numerous clubs, including the Math Club and the Spanish Club. Last semester, I was awarded two prestigious scholarships: the James B. Murray Humanities Scholarship and the Valley Proteins Fellows Scholarship. As part of the seventh class of Fellows, I was selected from more than 250,000 people served by the Virginia Community College System to receive this recognition. I feel confident that PVCC has gifted me the tools to excel when I transfer to the University of Virginia as a junior in August, and I am eager to continue to take full advantage of all educational opportunities presented to me.

Although it is becoming clear to me that I will likely study economics at UVA and thus no longer have the time to devote to an elective, I am now in my fourth semester of taking college level Spanish and was recently accepted into a study-abroad program that will really enhance my language study with PVCC. This 11-day trip (or thirteen, with an extension to Portugal) includes stops in Barcelona, Valencia, Granada, Costa del Sol, Seville, Madrid and cost permitting, Lisbon, focusing on the Spanish language and cultures. Our curriculum will also allow the chance to explore the country’s oldest cathedrals, famous landmarks, palaces and historic neighborhoods, to interact with other Spanish students and native speakers - what a chance to strengthen my Spanish comprehension and speaking skills!

I have been working as many hours as my studies permit to cover the majority of the program on my own, and while I was fortunate to win some scholarship assistance, the cost is still too high. I will be $2,000 short of the necessary funds to pay for it all come May. This is why I am asking you - my community, friends and family members who have supported me so far - for your help. Whatever you can afford to give will be heartily appreciated.

Thank your consideration and taking the time to read this. And thank you for making a difference in my educational career!

Sam
