Ruth Ann's Recovery Fund

I have a story for you. Stop me if you've heard this one. 

It's a hot, wet New Orleans night. A young woman, let's call her Ruth Ann, rides her bicycle over the slippery streetcar track. Her wheel catches. She tumbles. She calls for help and is able to receive affordable care that matches her income level in a timely fashion. Thus, she is also able take her paid time away from work to recover properly, as she is not worried about horrifying medical debt.

Sadly, this is not that story. This is the story of that same wonderful, thoughtful, funny, ambitious young woman in that same bicycle accident, but without the part where she can afford her care. This is the story in which Ruth Ann finds out she requires non-cosmetic face surgery to prevent vision loss and spends every moment worrying about how to pay for it rather than how it will go. In this story, like in so many stories we know, our heroine does not have health insurance. This story breaks our hearts, because we know she, and everyone in her position, warrants better. 

The upside is that we can help write the ending. We get to band together and help our beloved Ruth Ann in her time of need. After all, it's what she'd do for each and every one of us.
