Help Nikita End His Fight With Leukaemia!

Donation protected
In April 2019, our friend Nikita was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). The only hope for a cure was a unique treatment programme in Germany and a bone marrow transplant from a donor who was an 100% match. This treatment cost a staggering €475,000 but his family managed to raise the money by selling their apartment & due to the kindness of hundreds of people who donated. In January this year, Nikita successfully received the transplant. However the hospital has just presented them with an additional bill for €90,000, due to complications he had whilst he was awaiting a donor (his lungs failed and fell into a coma for 8 days). Please help us raise the final €90,000 so that Nikita can finally go home.

Let me tell you an incredibly story of perseverance. When Nikita was just 15 years old, he was struck down with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, an incredibly rare form cancer which is diagnosed in approximately 3,100 people in the UK every year. The treatment? And immediate bone marrow transplant, with his father acting as the donor. Unfortunately, the transplant didn’t take, and Nikita pushed through two sepsis infections. The doctors told him would not survive another transplant.

Nikita and his family refused to give up. There was one solution - a unique treatment programme in Germany, with another bone marrow transplant, this time provided by a donor who would be an 100% match (not easy to find!). The catch? The treatment would cost €475,000. Nikita at this time was in an emergency unit in the hospital on life support. His parents sold their apartment and moved into a small rental by the hospital to raise funds. His younger brother, just 6 years old, was sent to live with their grandmother, because they couldn’t risk him bringing back an infection from the playground. They spend day and night fundraising what seemed like an impossible sum.

However, despite the incredible odds, thanks to the kindness and generosity of hundreds of people, we raised this sum, and in October 2020 Nikita went to Germany to receive further treatment. Again, nothing seemed straightforward. His donor dropped out at the last minute. In order to survive whilst a new donor was found, Nikita went through two rounds of chemotherapy. A new donor was found with the operation scheduled for the 19.01.21 - on the 18.01.21 Nikita ended up in the ICU with a chronic infection and lung failure. He was in a critical state, and was even in a coma for 8 days - but by some miracle he survived, and despite all these challenges the hospital was able to complete the transplant successfully. Nikita, now 17, could be going home in as little as 4 months. He can finally see his little brother. He can go out with friends. He can finally start to live the life a young teenage boy is supposed to live, instead of fighting for his life (although he never complains!).

There is only one final challenge - because Nikita’s condition deteriorated and he ended up in the ICU, the recovery process has been longer and slower than anticipated. The hospital has just presented Nikita’s family with another bill - for an additional €90,000.

This is where our fundraiser comes in! Nikita and has family have been through the most difficult journey, but a happy ending and the light at thee end of the tunnel is in sight. We are fundraising to help them cover these final costs, so they can finish the treatment, and take their son home.

Any additional money raised will be used to cover the two years of medication that Nikita will be needing to take after he is discharged to ensure he goes into a full and sustained remission.

Total fundraising target: €90,000 (£80,000).

Thank you everyone for your generosity and help. We’ve done this once, we can do this again!!!
