Help Nette on her Computer Science degree

I didn't think it could happen… but it did.

Because of the devasting  COVID-19, my life in our Filipino village became even tougher, I was losing hope for my future and the future of my family until...  I received an email offer of a lifetime.

I followed the encouragement of my mentor and applied to an international school so I could better my future even during devasting lockdowns.

 

On Sept 13, I got accepted to the University of London’s BSc in Computer Science online degree offer via the performance-based admission program.

 

When I saw the offer letter I felt shocked, elated, and worried.

 

It’s my biggest dream and my biggest fear.

 

“How would I support my family while in school?”

 

“How could I possibly pay for schooling?”

 

“How could my family survive?”

 

To be honest...

 

Because of COVID, my father lost his job and I, as the breadwinner of the family and the eldest child, knew I had to step out and help him support our family of five.

Our entire country remains on lockdown preventing us from traveling to find work or to work.

In the Philippines, government aid is not accessible to all and the situation is desperate.

 

I had to find a way to help my father in our source of income for my entire family.

 

Because of my passionate desire to learn and my good computing skills, I attracted my first employer who I met in an online book club and got a job.

 

Since working online...

 

I also joined other deep thinking communities like Roam Research Book Club, Ship 30 for 30, and Ness Labs (from the generosity of their founders) to improve my thinking and computer skills even more.

 

Along the way, I discovered an insatiable passion for computer science and writing.

 

I had a vision of being a startup founder someday and I know how much having a computer science degree will help me to build the MVP of my startup idea.

 

Because of this...

 

I decided to start saving money for my studies. I desperately want to have a college degree in a field I am passionate about.

 

I am desperate to give my parents a child with a college degree. Not only will I be the first to have a college degree in our family but also among my relatives on the mother's side.

 

I searched and searched for opportunities to study again and decided to take an online path so I can work part-time while studying and save money for it.

 

I stumbled upon the opportunity to study at the University of London and didn't hesitate to apply to it.

 

I had no expectations. I just exhausted all of the possibilities. Then, I was shocked I got in!

 

Since I have only been working for 6 months after my first employment and being the breadwinner of our family, I haven't saved up much since then.

 

I also realized I can't support my family while studying full time.

 

This is why I need people to invest in me and to be part of this journey, to be part of this success story, and to help me support my family while I am studying.

Hi, my name is Nette, short for Antonette. I’m from the Philippines, historically a third-world country and currently a developing one.

 

Poverty is high, most of us lack access to basic health care, higher education, and work opportunities to make a better life.

 

But I’m grateful I found a supportive international community online that gave me hope to dream big and make a better life for myself and my family.

This is some background about the Crowdfunded Scholarship.

 

Please keep in mind this scholarship is in Canadian dollars as Samantha Postman is hosting it. Hosting is unavailable in the Philippines.

To give $50 USD, you enter $65 in the CAD donation box • $20 USD, enter $25 CAD. 

 

For $100 USD, enter $125 CAD

 

Contributions are calculated in CAD and converted to your home country's currency. 

 

The declared tuition fees from the degree catalog were £16,790 GBP for the whole three years plus books, which is around $30,000 CAD. I added the estimated monthly living expenses as $650 CAD ($500 USD)

 

This is how I came up with the calculations shown in Table 1.
