Help My Uncle Jun Beat Cardiomegaly

Hi it’s Ronnie. Recently, I found out my 60-year old uncle, Jun Beato, from the Philippines is suffering from cardiomegaly – an abnormal enlargement of the heart. His heart has gotten so enlarged that it’s operating only at 46% giving him heart palpitations, shortness of breath, swollen legs and feet, and a daily general feeling of tiredness. As his heart’s ability to pump blood continues to decline, the rest of his internal organs continues to suffer, including his kidneys, gallbladder and pancreas.

The only way to make his condition better is to undergo a treatment called angioplasty: a procedure to open his narrowed arteries and restore blood flow. You can look it up to see what it does, but it’s PhP350,000($6,500) — an expensive treatment to have, especially in the Philippines. The treatment also requires an angiogram (PhP60,000/$1,100), the imaging technique to diagnose his blood vessels. Both these procedures would take a toll into my uncle’s immediate family, including his 5-year old daughter.

After losing his wife in a tragic accident 13 years ago, I have witnessed my uncle’s hardwork and dedication to ensure that his kids get the proper education they need. His loss took a heavy toll in their lives including losing their family’s business - their main source of income. Despite this, he remained persistent and worked diligently for the family, never running short of his responsibilities. I would like to see him beat this condition and continue to be the strong uncle I know, undefeated.
