HELP MY HUSBAND RECOVER FROM SPINAL CORD INJURY

Donation protected

My name is Arpita, and I am asking for assistance in raising funds for my husband Tushar Wadhwani.
If you know Tushar then you know that he is one of the most compassionate, caring, and hardworking person you will ever meet. He has a career in Construction Management, loves dancing, playing cricket, traveling, socializing, and enjoying life as a go-getting 30-year-old. We are also supporting his retired parents back in India.

On October 30th Tushar was celebrating his nephew’s birthday at the trampoline park. He fell on his neck and suffered a fractured dislocation at the C5-C6 interspace causing incomplete spinal cord injury. After being immediately taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for emergency surgery, he spent 15 days in the ICU and then was transferred to the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopedic Institute. He is going through intense therapies to help him learn how to live life all over again. The doctors are hoping that he may be able to come home as early as January 6th. He will then continue his therapy as an outpatient.

Tushar is currently confined to a wheelchair with paraplegia, he has limited motion of his arms. He has no movement from the chest down, which has meant requiring 24-hour care from others. Being incontinent, he requires specialist equipment to assist him.

Funds collected with this campaign will go towards Tushar’s costly equipment, rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy to get back to everyday activities and independence. They will also assist with his extensive treatment and medication needs. Handicapped accessibility changes will need to be made, along with modified home care equipment and transportation.

Tushar currently lives in a handicap inaccessible apartment on the 3rd floor. He would need an accessible home to return to. This poses a great challenge for him as major home adaptations will need to be made. We are hard-pressed for time, as the rehab center will not release him to go home if the house modifications are not complete by the time of discharge. We would have to resort to looking at other care facilities in the interim if we are unable to pay for and complete the minimum home modifications (for at least one access ramp and the master bathroom remodel) by Tushar’s discharge date. Medical insurance will cover some of the medical costs, but a lot of it is going to have to be paid for out of pocket and we know that we are really going to need help.

The journey ahead is long and full of uncertainty. With the love and support of family and friends, we believe that anything is possible.

Thank you for taking the time to read Tushar's story and any sharing of this page would also be greatly appreciated!
