Help Mom get a new liver
Donation protected
In March of 2019, my mom, Eloise Duffy, was diagnosed with a small spot of liver cancer. The doctors had caught it early and that was great. She could undergo a minor two-day procedure (microwave ablation) to arrest the cancer and then follow up with a liver transplant in a year or so.
In early April, she underwent this minor procedure, but "minor" was unfortunately not true in her case. Her blood pressure tanked after the procedure. Between the blood pressure drop and the medications used in the procedure, her kidneys took a long time to recover. This further damaged her liver. After weeks in the hospital, her kidneys recovered. Her liver, unfortunately, did not.
So, instead of mom getting a liver transplant in a year or so, she'll be getting a liver transplant "soon". We don't know how soon. Insurance covers most of the costs, but we do need to meet the deductible ($7000). Also, some of the required post-transplant medication is not covered under insurance ($500/month). Because of this unexpected shortened timeline, we're reaching out to all of you, friends and family alike, to help us in our time of need.
We are not remotely ready to let mom go. My sister and I need her. Her granddaughters and grandsons need her. Her great-grandsons need her. Her friends love her and are not willing to let her go. So please stand with us in her time of need.
Mom will be receiving her liver in Dallas just across the Trinity from downtown. Follow up requires us to be very close to the hospital and we plan on renting (short-term) an apartment or hotel suite (depending on availability) in order to better facilitate her recovery. My sister will be down from Iowa for weeks post-op and I plan on working from there. But visits or personal help would be greatly appreciated during that time.
We'll keep you all posted on where we are in this process.
