Help Mila Run, Again!

This is Mila.    Owned by Morgon Lawrence and Chris Hazeltine, Mila is a 13-year old quarter horse and is a Level 3 horse, in the Parelli Natural Horsemanship program.

Two months ago, while on a trail ride, Mila was injured.  At first, her injury appeared related to her mild arthritis.  But, we were very wrong!

After multiple vet visits and numerous ultra-sounds, Mila was diagnosed with a significant medial suspensory branch injury to her left-hind leg.

Mila needs medical injections.   Without these injections, she will never be able to run and play like a regular horse, again!

As they say, “No hoof, no horse.”  This kind of injury is extremely life limiting to Mila, if not repaired.

That’s why we really need your help!

The injection Mila needs what is called a BMAC and it will cost $6000.  Since the injection process is multi-step, this procedure needs to occur between October 18 and November 1.  The $6000 will cover the multiple treatments and ultra-sounds to check on progress.

Below are illustrations that show her injury.

The following illustration shows what a proper suspensory ligament looks like.  A suspensory ligament is like a tightly packed bungee cord.  Horses need this ligament to run, jump, and – in every sense -- move.

Mila's injury is like a tear in the bungee cord.

In the ultra-sound, below, the yellow arrow on the left shows how a healthy ligament should look.  The yellow arrow on the right points to where Mila is injured.

Warning: We’re Gonna Do Science!

BMAC stands for ‘bone marrow aspirate concentrate.’  The medical procedure will take Mila’s bone marrow from her sternum and concentrate it for the mesenchymal stem cells and the hematopoietic stem cells, which are critical for tissue regeneration and bone formation.  Then, these stem cells will be injected into her suspensory ligament injury.  This will help to speed up the healing process.  Mila will still be at stall-rest for at least 6 months, even with the BMAC procedure.  Without the BMAC, it is highly doubtful that Mila will heal properly.

We’ve been saving as much as we can for the procedure but, on a teacher’s salary, this has been difficult.

All of our animals are life-partners.

And, Mila still has miles of trails to explore!

Help Mila run, again.

Any amount you can offer is greatly appreciated.
