Mike Donnelly is many things: an incredible student, a researcher with a knack for understanding the nuances and oddities of extremism and terrorism, a person driven by a strong sense of a better future. He is also a great friend—quick to laugh, quicker to drop everything and offer help.
Mike has worked with us at the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism at the Middlebury Institute for over a year, and we can honestly say that CTEC would not be the place it is, nor would we have been able to grow it like we have, without his tireless work and dedication. Mike has put in long hours on projects that have had meaningful, positive impacts on the world, even while he has also been a full-time student.
Now it’s our turn to help him. Mike has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia and has a difficult road ahead of him. As many of you know, living as a grad student is to live constantly near the edge, making ends meet through part-time work while devoting yourself to your studies. Without the ability to work, he’ll need all the help he can get to make it financially through the treatment and healing and then through the final phase of completing his degree. And his partner and family, who’ll be helping him navigate treatment, need our support, too.
