My name is Barton Aikman and I'm a graduate student at California Institute of the Arts, where I'll soon complete an MFA in Creative Writing with a concentration in Image and Text.
I'm happy to report that I was recently accepted to the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' Workshop. Clarion is an intensive and selective six-week writing program, filled with notable faculty and alumni (George R. R. Martin, Octavia Butler, Kelly Link, the list goes on and on). Needless to say, I am very excited to attend and am fundraising to help me get there. What are my goals in attending Clarion?
At Clarion I will continue to refine my writing and storytelling skills. I will write at least six new short stories and utilize the incredible resources there to make my work ready for publication. The stories I complete will likewise go toward my short story collection. I will package my short story collection with the novel I completed for my thesis to acquire a literary agent and to begin looking for publishers. All of my goals will also go toward making me more competitive for writing and teaching positions.
What will I do with the funds raised?
The Clarion tuition of $5150 includes room and board, two meals a day, and of course, the opportunity of a lifetime for a developing writer. I was awarded a partial scholarship, which brings my tuition cost to $3150. My thanks to the Clarion Foundation for making that scholarship a possibility.
All funds will go toward recuperating the remaining cost of my tuition. Since Clarion is an opportunity I can't pass up, I'll be using some money set aside from my student loans to secure my place in the program. These funds were ideally set aside to either go straight back into my student loan payments or to help me stay afloat while finding a job after grad school. This fundraiser will help me stay financially secure.
Thank you in advance for any support you send my way!
