Help Me Please!!! Long Term Rehabilitation Therapy

In early October 2020, my father Froilan Evaristo Cuadros (69) contracted Covid-19. On October 12th his saturation of oxygen dropped, so the ambulance drove him to the nearest medical center. After 18 days in ICU, he required ventilation as the virus attacked both of his lungs, so he was intubated on October 30th. After 25 days, his endotracheal tube from his mouth was removed and had a tracheostomy surgery. It was frustrating to hear that one of the hospital’s surgeons didn’t feel capable to do my father’s tracheostomy and the ENT surgeon wasn’t allow to perform it. So, I personally searched the hospital's website and contacted a surgeon.
My father doesn’t have a health insurance! He doesn’t qualify for Medicaid due to his legal status. In order to get this benefit, he needs to be a USA Permanent Resident for at least 5 years. He immigrated to the United States of America 4 years ago. With 65 years old and no English, my father didn’t have an opportunity to work and file taxes. This is why he couldn’t qualify for an affordable heath plan through Maryland Health Connection neither.
With laughter and a smile that is infectious, everyone who knows my father Froilan (Lachito) loves him. Lachito has the kindest heart and would do absolutely anything for anyone. Most importantly, he is an extremely loving father of two and a charming and playful grandfather of five.
The only connection we are having with him is through FaceTime where my family from Peru and us send love and affection to him as he sleeps. Even though my father is weak, he hears us, he tries to open his eyes and lips. His desire to communicate with us is his strength to continue living.
After 2.5 months exhausting all other options, doctors have mentioned that my father might need a ventilator for a longer time, so he will have to be transfer to a Long-Term Rehabilitation Facility. None of them wanted to admit my father without health insurance. A couple of amazing nurses suggested we find a financial guarantor or get some type of warranty deposit, so we can prove the new facility will get pay for my father’s rehabilitation therapies. So, they encouraged us to start this campaign. Another cruel option doctor’s mentioned is to have my father disconnected from the ventilator to stop his life. I guess a lung transplant is not an option for him due to the lack of his health insurance.
Regardless of when and where this journey takes us, we will be with my father Lachito to support him during this time. My sister and I continue to find encouragement and strength in the outpouring of love and support from our family, friends, and community. We remain positive that my father will soon be back where he belongs, at home.

A principios de octubre de 2020, mi padre Froilan Evaristo Cuadros (69) contrajo Covid-19. El 12 de octubre. su saturación de oxígeno disminuyó, por lo que la ambulancia lo llevó al centro médico más cercano. Luego de 18 días en la UCI, requirió ventilación ya que el virus atacó sus dos pulmones, por lo que fue intubado el 30 de octubre. Después de 25 días, le quitaron el tubo endotraqueal de la boca y le hicieron una traqueotomía en el cuello. Fue frustrante escuchar que uno de los cirujanos del hospital no se sentía capaz de realizar la traqueotomía de mi padre y que el cirujano otorrinolaringólogo no estaba autorizado a hacerlo. Entonces, busqué personalmente el sitio web del hospital y me comuniqué con un cirujano.
Mi padre no tiene seguro médico, no califica para Medicaid debido a su estado legal. Para obtener este beneficio, debe ser residente permanente de EE. UU. Durante al menos 5 años. Emigró a los Estados Unidos de América hace 4 años. Con 65 años y sin inglés, mi padre no tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar y presentar impuestos. Por eso tampoco podía calificar para un plan de salud asequible a través de Maryland Health Connection.
Con risas y una sonrisa contagiosa, todos los que conocen a mi padre Froilan (Lachito) lo quieren. Lachito tiene el corazón más bondadoso y haría absolutamente cualquier cosa por cualquiera. Lo más importante es que es un padre cariñoso de 2 hijas y un abuelo encantador y juguetón de 5 niet@s.
La única conexión que estamos teniendo con él es a través de FaceTime donde mi familia de Perú y nosotros le enviamos amor y cariño mientras duerme. Aunque mi papa esta débil, nos escucha, trata de abrir los ojos y los labios. Su deseo de comunicarse con nosotros le da fuerza para seguir viviendo.
Después de dos meses y medio de agotar todas las demás opciones, los médicos han mencionado que mi padre podría necesitar un respirador por más tiempo, por lo que tendria que ser trasladado a un centro de rehabilitación de largo plazo. Ninguno de ellos quiere admitir a mi papa sin seguro médico. Un par de increíbles enfermeros sugirieron encontrar un garante financiero u obtener algún tipo de depósito de garantía para demostrarle a la nueva instalación que recibirán el pago por las terapias de rehabilitación de mi padre. Entonces, nos motivaron a comenzar esta campana. Otra opción cruel que mencionó el médico es desconectar a mi padre del ventilador para detener su vida. Supongo que un trasplante de pulmón no es una opción para él debido a la falta de seguro médico.
Independientemente de cuándo y dónde nos lleve este viaje, estaremos con mi padre Lachito para apoyarlo durante este tiempo. Mi hermana y yo seguimos encontrando aliento y fortaleza en la efusión de amor y apoyo de nuestra familia, amigos y comunidad. Seguimos seguros de que mi padre pronto estará de regreso a donde pertenece, en casa.
