On Thursday, February 4th, Matt and his family were given news that rocked their world and to say it knocked the breath out of every single person that knows him is an understatement. As many of you became aware from the email that he sent, Matt was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, including a large bleeding tumor where the esophagus meets the stomach. The cancer has also spread to multiple areas of the body and left specialists with very limited treatment options and a prognosis of one year.
To know Matt is to know his extreme kindness and thoughtfulness, his ability to make you laugh like crazy with his witty and unrivaled sense of humor, and his love for all things baseball, especially his team - the Toronto Blue Jays. But to really know Matt is to know the immense love that he has for his precious wife, Melanie and their two sons, Ryan and Austin.
Matt and Melanie are high school sweethearts and to be in their presence is to witness the sweet love and friendship they share. Matt's sons are the light of his life and he has cherished every second spent coaching them in various sports.
So many of you have reached out looking for ways to help, so as Matt and his family start the long and difficult journey of navigating through oncology appointments and treatment options in hopes of prolonging his life, we are forming this page to show them our unwavering support --- we ARE "Aber's Army". Matt has been a part of the Barclays family for over 9 years and you've undoubtedly been the recipient of his infectious smile, encouraging words or positive nature at one time or another. Let's now rally around him and show him how strong we all can be together.
Melanie is taking a leave from her job to be home with Matt full-time so our goal is to raise funds to help with medical bills, meals and whatever their various needs may be in the coming days and months ahead, as well as to assist with whatever the future may hold for this precious family. Matt is a fighter and we want him to be able to fully focus his strength on fighting this disease as well as spending time with his family.
