I am Karima Awad, a chef assistant originally from Gaza and currently residing in Sweden. I have initiated this fundraiser for my sister's family in Gaza to assist them in evacuating for safety and medical assistance. I now hand over to Maryam, my niece, who will share their story in her own words.

“Dear Friends and Supporters,

I am reaching out to you with a heartfelt plea for assistance for my family and me as we navigate dire circumstances in Gaza. My name is Maryam Nasr, and I am compelled to share our story with you in the hopes that together, we can forge a path to a brighter future.

From a young age, I harboured aspirations of becoming a doctor, driven by a deep-seated desire to make a meaningful impact in the world. However, as I reached my fifth year of medical school, our lives were shattered by the eruption of conflict in Gaza. The destruction of my university and the devastating impact on medical facilities dashed my dreams, leaving me with seemingly insurmountable obstacles to pursuing my studies and aspirations. To add to the devastation, I have lost esteemed colleagues and professors, further compounding the tragedy. This is me during a training session at the hospital:

My parents, Ziad and Iman, have dedicated their lives to providing for our family. My father, a retired electrical engineer, and my mother, a retired math teacher, now find themselves grappling with the harsh realities of war, struggling to make ends meet amidst the chaos. Yet, our greatest concern lies with my younger brother, Hassan.

Hassan, now 17 years old, battles with Mental retardation & fragile x syndrome, requiring specialised care and support that is woefully unavailable in Gaza. Even prior to the conflict, accessing adequate care for Hassan posed significant challenges. Now, with the healthcare system in ruins, his condition has precipitously worsened, leaving us heartbroken and desperate for assistance. Adding to his challenges, Hassan also suffers from teeth problems and osteoporosis, further complicating his medical condition. Staying cooped up at home for long periods exacerbates his condition, yet the risks of venturing outside amidst the conflict pose a constant threat to our lives.

Hassan's condition demands a diet rich in protein and vitamins (such as eggs, milk, and food supplements) due to his weakened bones. Unfortunately, these essentials are scarce in Gaza, and if available, they are prohibitively expensive. Additionally, Hassan requires specialized care items like diapers, which are also difficult to obtain. These are his medical reports and a video of him during an essential treatment:

Moreover, both of my parents require care, as the stress and strain of the situation have taken a toll on their health. The uncertainty and fear surrounding us have exacerbated their existing medical conditions, and the medical care they need is no longer available in Gaza.

My ambition to become a doctor was inexorably tied to my desire to help my brother and others facing similar challenges. However, the stark reality of our circumstances has left me grappling with the harsh truth that we can barely afford to put food on the table, let alone provide the essential medical care Hassan and my parents so desperately require.

Our only beacon of hope for a better future lies in evacuating Gaza to Egypt and subsequently relocating to Libya, where my two other brothers reside. There, we hope to access the vital medical treatment Hassan needs, while I endeavour to continue my studies in medicine.

Yet, the financial burden of evacuation and travel expenses far exceeds our means. It is for this reason that we humbly turn to our community for support. Your generous contributions will help alleviate the costs associated with evacuation, travel fees, and temporary living expenses during our journey to safety and medical treatment.

Here's a breakdown of the costs:

Evacuation from Gaza through Rafah border crossing: $5000 x 4 people = $20,000

Traveling fees from Egypt to Libya: $2000 x 4 people = $8000

Passport fee for my father: $100

1 month of temporary living expenses in Egypt (until relocating to Libya), including food, shelter, and transportation: $5,000

Medical expenses and specialized care for Hassan: $5,000
