Help Martin to Walk! - Ayuda a Martín a Caminar!

Meet Martin our bubbly and loving 2-and-a-half-year-old son. Martin is one of the loveliest kids you will meet, he is curious, adventurous and always has a smile on. Martin was born prematurely and despite his eagerness to explore the world we noticed delays with his gross motor skills and trouble achieving major milestones.

Therefore, we took him to paediatricians and specialists. After various exams and an MRI, Martin was diagnosed with cerebral palsy spastic diplegia at only 24 months old.

Cerebral palsy spastic diplegia is a life-long, permanent condition that affects muscle control, coordination, and tone, as well as posture, and balance. Martin’s legs are the most affected, impacting his ability to walk and transfer from one position to another, like sitting to standing.

Martin has also undergone painful procedures like serial casting to stretch and lengthen the muscles in his legs. He has also had Botox injections, while under general anaesthetic, to reduce muscle stiffness in his legs. He attends rigorous weekly physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions to build strength and uses a walker.

While these interventions provide slight relief, their impact reduces over time. And once again Martin’s legs tighten, causing him discomfort and very limited mobility. If nothing is done, Martin is at risk of having permanent orthopaedic deformities and will have to rely on walking aids and other people for the rest of his life.

However, there is hope for Martin. After intensive testing, the specialist team at St Louis’ Children's Hospital have deemed Martin an ideal candidate for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery. This surgery will permanently reduce the spasticity in his legs and reduce the number of orthopaedic operations Martin might otherwise need.

Early intervention is key to reducing or eliminating spasticity and we are extremely excited to have been given a date for the surgery scheduled for the 11th of April 2023. Extensive results show that children with similar symptoms to Martin develop more normal muscle tone and experience less stiffness after surgery. With continual physical therapy post-surgery, Martin will hopefully walk independently.

We are reluctant to ask for help but know that without your support, we cannot afford to take Martin to The United States for this life-changing surgery. We are a regular hardworking middle-class family; I work at a school as an IT Support and my wife works at elderly care as a physiotherapist and we don’t have the $130,000 needed for the cost of surgery, travel expenses and post-operative therapy both in America and back in Australia. We need your support in raising the funds to change Martin’s life.

Conoce a Martin, nuestro amoroso hijo lleno de vida de 2 años y medio. Martin es uno de los niños más encantadores que conocerás, es curioso, aventurero y siempre tiene una sonrisa. Martin nació prematuramente y, a pesar de su afán por explorar el mundo, notamos retrasos en sus habilidades motoras gruesas y problemas para lograr hitos importantes.

Después de varios exámenes y una resonancia magnética, a Martin se le diagnosticó parálisis cerebral diplejía espástica con solo 24 meses de edad.

La diplejía espástica con parálisis cerebral es una afección permanente que afecta el control muscular, la coordinación y el tono, así como la postura y el equilibrio. Las piernas de Martin son las más afectadas, lo que afecta su capacidad para caminar y cambiar de una posición a otra, como sentarse y ponerse de pie.

Martin también se ha sometido a procedimientos dolorosos como yesos en serie para estirar y alargar los músculos de las piernas. Después de pruebas intensivas, el equipo de especialistas del St Louis' Children's Hospital ha considerado a Martin un candidato ideal para la cirugía de rizotomía dorsal selectiva (SDR). Esta cirugía reducirá de forma permanente la espasticidad en sus piernas y reducirá la cantidad de operaciones ortopédicas que, de lo contrario, Martin podría necesitar.
