One of our SDRC family members has had a tragic loss. As a result of a long term illness, Maria Lizaola’s daughter, Emily, passed away. Maria is a Service Coordinator in Unit 23 in Santee.
Emily was diagnosed with severe congenital neutropenia at about 18 months old. In essence, Emily's bone marrow wasn't producing the white blood cells to fight infections. On November 21, 2016, the family was informed that something had changed... she was diagnosed with MDS myelodysplastic syndrome or bone marrow failure. Emily then underwent a bone marrow transplant. Though the transplant was successful, it led to multiple complications, which eventually led to Emily’s passing on August 22, 2018, after fighting her toughest battle. She was 13 years old. She was surrounded by her loving family, who held her hand through all of this.
Maria has been a member of the SDRC family for over 15 years and has been not only an exemplary Service Coordinator, but a true team player. She is the first to volunteer to help her co-workers and will go out of her way to assist her unit with anything she can. She is beloved by her clients, their families and by all of us who have had the privilege to work alongside her. Maria is not one to ask for compassion or assistance, but she has been through a mother’s worst nightmare and has done so while still serving SDRC. This is our opportunity to help one of our own in the only way we can right now. We may not have the magic words to make this all better, but we do have the means to assist her with addressing the financial burden of medical bills and final arrangements. We are all part of the SDRC family and one of our own needs us right now.
