Help Maria Fight Cancer

After three years of living with and fighting Stage 4 Breast Cancer, our Dear Maria is now facing the hardest battle so far. Maria was diagnosed in 2016 with metastatic breast cancer which had spread to her liver and bones. She was given a couple of months to live, but against all odds she has stayed strong and survived countless treatments and two major surgeries to remove her breasts and her uterus. Three years since her diagnosis she continues to show us how much she loves life.
Unfortunately, over the last two months, Maria has been battling liver disease and her health has worsened dramatically. Because her liver is too damaged, her only choice of treatment is to return to chemotherapy. The current treatment plan is weekly infusions of Taxol (paclitaxel), until her liver is strong enough to take more.
With all of this going on, Maria was admitted into hospital last week (June 2019) due to a life-threatening infection that left her unable to swallow even water and in tremendous pain that required morphine to manage.
The good news is that Maria is incredibly strong and has always responded well to chemotherapy. This time, after only the first infusion, the chemotherapy is already beginning to show signs that it is working, and she also beat the infection. She has an amazing team of doctors supporting her and they are sure she will get through this.
The bad news is that Maria’s insurance will no longer cover any medical expenses and from now on all treatments must be paid out of pocket.
With the infusion she will need plenty of pre-meds to prevent side effects and multiple shots of a G-CSF (granulocyte-colony stimulating factor) to maintain her white blood count so she has an immune system and can fight off infection. Both the chemotherapy and the G-CSF are expensive. While she's in treatment her liver will need to be very closely monitored requiring many labs and scans. Each treatment is long, tiring and risky, so she will need to stay close to the hospital, which means paying for a hotel. She desperately needs our help.
Maria has big dreams--dreams that include adopting children and opening a rescue for animals. She loves her dogs and baking and dancing. She has navigated the hell that is breast cancer with more grace than can be expected of someone so young that has lost so much to this insidious disease.
She smiles easily. She is funny and smart and she does not wallow in her misfortune. She is determined to support other women dealing with breast cancer. She has a big, beautiful heart and so much life to live still.
