Disclaimer: I am an internal medicine physician practicing in the USA and actively involved in the care of COVID-19 patients. Given below is the hospital course of a family friend in India, who I have been following since day 1.

Mahesh is a married 42-year-old healthy individual with no medical comorbidities, and a father of 3 (4,8 and 15 years old), who has been struggling with COVID-19 related symptoms since the end of Nov’20 and has been hospitalized due to complications of the same since December 1st, 2020. Mahesh has completed a course of remdesivir and also received steroids, convalescent plasma, and tocilizumab with no significant improvement. After almost 2 weeks of being on non-invasive ventilatory support (breathing mask), Mahesh is currently battling for life with severe ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome/life-threatening lung injury), intubated (on ventilator/ breathing support) for the past 7 days, fed through a nasogastric tube and being kept in the prone position (laying on the stomach) for at least 16-18 hours a day. Mahesh’s hospital course is further complicated with multidrug-resistant (resistant to multiple commonly used antibiotics) pseudomonas bacterial infection of the lungs and enterococcus bacterial infection of the urinary tract.

Mahesh earns INR 50,000 per month (USD 679). The hospital bill for the past 20 days is INR 50,000-60,000 per day (USD 679 to 815); totaling to USD 13,580 to 16,300 so far. Mahesh’s condition continues to remain critical at this time and he needs to be hospitalized for an unknown period of time. Mahesh’s family is in dire need of help to support his treatment and further hospital stay. Hospital expenses need to be paid on a daily basis and they are already under a mountain of DEBT.

When Mahesh recovers (hopefully soon) from this illness, his family will have a mountain of a financial burden to fight! Please, donate in any amount to help Mahesh and his family get through this struggle.
