Help Lori Phelps Beat Cancer

Dr. Lori Phelps has been an integral part of the development of the California Association for Alcohol/Drug Educators (CAADE) as well as a teacher/professor at California State University Fullerton, Saddleback College, Cypress College and Rio Hondo College for many years. She created the Substance Abuse Track at CSUF for the Bachelor's degree in Human Services. The track is the only accredited bachelor’s level addiction counselor training program in California and her students love their "Doc Lori."
Anyone who knows Lori will agree that her passion is teaching about addiction and serving as CAADE's Executive Director. Her tireless work, amazing teaching style, and kind heart have helped hundreds, if not thousands, of students & recovering addicts/alcoholics. She always gives her time and knowledge to friends, colleagues and students and never asks for anything in return.
In October 2013, Lori was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer and was immediately sent into emergency surgery to remove a large mass that was attached to her bladder and small intestine. A PET scan revealed that the cancer had metastacized to her liver so she was started on chemotherapy. The first round of chemo had horrendous side effects which sent Lori to the emergency room and resulted in her being hospitalized. The doctors were able to change the type of chemo they were using, and Lori had a successful four months of chemotherapy followed by a second surgery to remove the left lobe of her liver where the cancer had spread. She is now preparing for six more months of chemo which will hopefully prevent the cancer from recurring. Sadly, her insurance didn't cover the cutting edge gene-targeted therapy that would have turned off the mutated genes that are causing the cancer. The cost of that therapy would run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, so she couldn't get the treatment, in spite of her family's continuing love and financial sacrifice.
Lori has had to put herself in massive debt due to medical bills and is worried about her future ability to get treatment. Her outlook is good at this time, but she needs help! Amongst her many medical bills, she has used up her all of her medical leave at Cal State Fullerton and is facing some difficult decisions regarding her employment and health insurance. Having known Lori for many years, I know she would never ask for monetary help, but the situation is dire. I am doing this fundraiser for Lori because she helped me get where I am professionally and personally and because we receive calls daily in the CAADE office asking how people can help. Please help Lori get the treatment she desperately needs and deserves. ANY help, whether it be a donation or a prayer, is greatly appreciated.
