Help 'Little Urchins' Save Kangaroos like Angel

Donation protected

TODAY, MON JAN 25 UPDATE NOW POSTED ON THE MAIN PAGE:

You know what sucks about renal failure in kangaroos? The false hope. The rollercoaster ride they take you on as they fight to stay alive. “Oh wow, she wants a bottle” and “her ears are upright”, or “look at all that grass she’s eating” or “she’s standing up!”. These are not things that dying animals should be doing, so she must be getting better… right?

Wrong. Last night, Angel’s condition began to deteriorate significantly and all our hopes and prayers that she may battle through this were dashed.

The gut wrenching decision no one wants to make for an animal they love as much as one might love their own child, had to be made by Kat late last night - if Angel had not improved overnight, then it was time to turn off her lights so she didn’t suffer slowly.

In a final act of mercy, love and devotion, Angel’s light will be extinguished sometime today.

Angel is dying from renal failure, caused from peritonitis. We will never know if Angel would have lived, had she been given an x-ray when Little Urchins first tried to get her in to see the various vets in Melbourne who didn’t consider her a priority. What we do know, is that we can’t let it happen again.

Early this morning and prior to learning this devastating news, the various fundraising activities were tallied up. The total (including GST) for the x-ray machine is $27,500. That means we need to raise $14,565 (or about $15K to cover fees) on this Go Fund Me.

The fundraiser will be shut down tonight at 8pm AEDT. If we haven’t reached the goal, I will personally make up the difference, along with requesting that a plaque be made for the x-ray machine in Angel’s name and in her honour.

I’m so desperately sorry Angel. I don’t even know you, but I love you so much the tears are making it hard for me to finish this. I’m so sorry they couldn’t save you. Sleep well darling Angel. You will never be forgotten.

Thank you to everyone who contributed via auctioning items, fundraising or donating.

Forever she will live on as ‘Angel the X-Ray Machine’ who will help others live.

For Angel.
Forever.

ANGEL AND FRIENDS NEED YOUR HELP

Despite best efforts from the folk at Little Urchins Wildlife Shelter in Melbourne, to get an urgent x-ray for Angel, a rare WHITE kangaroo last night, NO ONE could help. Not even the 24-hour vet clinics were willing to x-ray Angel last night (due to dogs and cats taking priority over wildlife).

Kangaroos suffer from stress-related diseases that can kill them within hours, so even moving Angel from vet to vet to get an x-ray, could cause her (or other kangaroos) more long term damage or even death.

Little Urchins is a 24/7 kangaroo sanctuary with a treatment room and a volunteer vet willing to attend at any hour to help any wildlife in the area who require assessment. But they can't help without the equipment!

THEY NEED A COMPACT/MOBILE X-RAY MACHINE ASAP.
Having an x-ray machine on site, that is mobile, will not only ensure kangaroos like Angel can receive immediate x-rays and vet care, but this x-ray machine can also be taken to road accident victims to check their injuries prior to assessing them for care vs euthanasia.

THIS IS ONE SMALL MACHINE THAT COULD SAVE MANY LIVES
Please.... we know times are tough, but if everyone chipped in just a few dollars, surely we could get this fundraiser up to the $35,000 required to buy a small used mobile x-ray machine? What do you say?

$35,000 is a LOT of money, but if all the people who who follow both Little Urchins and Wild 2 Free on Facebook all contributed just $1 each - we'd do it! If you can't spare that $1, then please SHARE this, in hope one of your friends sees it and can spare $2.

WHY AM I DOING THIS?
I have been following the work of Little Urchins Wildlife Shelter for 7 years now. I recall when Angel came into care, the miracle final joey and parting 'gift' from "Granny" an old doe who had been rescued by Little Urchins, where she lived the rest of her days peacefully until old age took her away. Angel was the furless pinky in Granny's pouch when she died.

Little Urchins inspires us to do the best we can for every kangaroo or joey in care. I know the trauma and stress of having a sick kangaroo you've raised from a joey and given up everything for - it's like losing a child. When I lost my home in the NYE bushfire, and our wildlife sanctuary (Wild 2 Free) was destroyed, people all over the world helped us get back on our feet.

Now we are asking people to help Kat ensure that kangaroos like Angel don't have to sit outside 24 hour emergency vet clinics for an hour, only to be turned away after all that time waiting, because a dog came in and took priority. Our wildlife are EVERYONE'S responsibility aren't they?

We love you Angel. We love you Kat. Let's get this done for Angel and every other kangaroo in your area and for every carer who can then bring a kangaroo to you at 3am if they need an urgent x-ray - because I know you will be there to help them when no one else will. - Rae
