Leighton is 22 years old and was born with a rare genetic syndrome called Hurler’s Syndrome (MPS). It is caused by a lack of enzyme that the body needs to digest sugar and as a result, molecules build up in the body which causes progressive damage to the heart, lungs, brain and other organs. Leighton was diagnosed before he turned 1 and underwent a life-threatening and life changing bone marrow transplant that meant his life expectancy of just 10 years old increased to that of an average person. He has many symptoms with his syndrome including a curve of his spine, bad eye sight, deafness, lung disease, halted growth, heart problems, learning disabilities and extraordinary facial features and was also on oxygen 24/7 for 8 years of his life. Unfortunately, the transplant could not aid with his skeletal problems therefore as years have gone on, his mobility, joints and bones have become worse meaning that he is now barely mobile and rarely leaves the house due to the pain and struggle from walking. Hope u can help. 30 of us are biking from Goldthorpe to oakwell and back to Goldthorpe on 12th March to help raise some money. Please if u could spare anything, a little could go along way.
