Duke TIP For Summer Studies
Donation protected
Hello! My name is Kera. I'm a 13-year-old girl from Kentucky. I was raised by my amazing parents, Kellie and Ron and the greatest sister a girl could ask for.
I go to middle school (I'm in 7th grade) every day; I laugh with my friends and work hard in class. My favorite classes are reading, writing, and world history! Reading has always been a passion of mine - I'm a big fan of Stephen King's The Stand, The Maze Runner, and The Mortal Instruments.
Recently I was given the chance to take the ACT earlier than most students because of my MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) scores, all thanks to Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program). I was really nervous, of course, but I really wanted to take the test. I knew no matter what score I got all that mattered was that I tried my hardest.
In the end, I got a composite score of 22. Math 16, science 19, English 23, and reading 28.
With an ACT score like that, I could get into Western Kentucky University at age 13!
Now Duke has invited me to attend their Center for Summer Studies. Only 7th-grade students with the highest ACT and SAT scores in the COUNTRY get to attend!
Essentially, I will be staying at a college for 3 weeks during the summer. I'll be exposed to an academic experience unlike any other where I will be offered advanced instruction equivalent to a semester-long college course. I'll be able to meet peers who have similar interests and priorities.
The only problem is, the program by itself is $4,300 which doesn't include the fees to get me there - North Carolina is a pretty far drive from Kentucky. The deadline for payment is May 1st.
I really hope you donate! I'd love to be able to have the opportunity to have a college-like experience to help prepare me for when I really do go to college (I want to major in psychology at Rollins). A donation would be highly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read this.
Sincerely, Kera
