Help Kenya Heal After Assault

Donation protected
On the morning of April 6, Kenya Inge was physically assaulted by a man outside a bar in Tuscaloosa, AL. Kenya was walking past Rounders Bar on the Strip near the University of Alabama where two men were having a verbal altercation. Kenya recognized one of the men as someone who had bought her artwork in the past, and she stopped to try to deescalate the situation and "keep the peace." The other man, who seemed intoxicated, violently slammed Kenya onto the ground, causing her to blackout. Luckily, there were other people around who assisted her. The attack was so sudden and severe that Kenya says when she first regained consciousness she thought she must have been hit by a car.

After the assault, Kenya was in the ICU for two days. Due to the injuries on her face, she currently cannot chew. She has surgery for her face scheduled on April 20. Kenya does not have health insurance, and the surgeon is requiring a deposit of $2,590 before performing the surgery.

Kenya has other less urgent physical injuries, in addition to the emotional and mental trauma of being assaulted, on top of the regular expenses and stress that come with having unstable housing and a lack of reliable income. Her journey of healing will likely require other physical care and mental health counseling. Most urgently, she needs funds for the upcoming surgery that will allow her to eat properly.

Kenya is an abstract visual artist and poet from Alabama. She has recently been working to build her platform as an artist and find ways to shape her life around her creativity, spirituality, and activism. As a Black transgender woman in the South, Kenya faces discrimination and systemic barriers every day. Kenya says:

"I've had a rough life, and I am just trying to do something positive. For this to happen now is tragic to me mentally, emotionally, and especially financially. Being transgender, I can't stop my life just because one person is ignorant. I can't live in fear. I've been doing that most of my life. It's not productive. It leads to depression. I want to heal."
