This summer, I'll be joining the Women's Global Empowerment Initiative in an ethnographic research program in Agadir, Morocco with its partner organization, Dar Si Hmad. I'll be studying Environmental Justice, Arabic, and other Indigenous Moroccan Languages.
As an organization, Dar Si Hmad promotes local culture and creates sustainable initiatives through education and the integration and use of scientific ingenuity, within the communities of Southwest Morocco. The Center for Language and Research Support has been host to many valuable researchers, language students, and interns. The unique location on the coast of southwest Morocco makes DSH a perfect host organization for delving into innovative research projects, for learning Berber dialects native only to the region, and for working with a dynamic, growing organization engaged in meaningful work.
Dar Si Hmad acknowledges specific roles and responsibilities to fulfill in this partnership. In the event that my fellowship is funded, Dar Si Hmad expects to facilitate the following to make sure my program to includes:
Participating in Arabic language classes, private instruction will be available in Moroccan Arabic (Darija), Modern Standard Arabic (fusha), and Berber (Tashelheet) with at least 4 hours of language study per week.
Support, advising, and facilitating a full-time independent study with a detailed scope of academic work and tangible deliverables each week through office hours with Dr. Jamila Baragach, the Executive Director of Dar Si Hmad.
Research assistant work alongside a PHD student resident on an issue affecting marginalized populations within the region.
Help organizing housing, including the option to live with a homestay family, in an apartment, or in a hotel, airport pick-up and drop-off, access to J-Stor as well as our own library, and an in-depth orientation.
I've already made $5800 from Yale funding, and thus am incredibly close to meeting the cost of my program, but I just need a little bit more to fund the whole program.
