Fifteen years ago, I followed my intuition to lead a life inspired by the arts, left my career in Public Health and moved to Brazil to continue my lifelong study of dance. While there, I met my life partner, Daniel. Our shared passion for dance, love of cultural diversity, and commitment to well-being inspired us to create Bahia in Motion, a Brazilian Dance and Capoeira (Brazilian martial arts) school serving children and adults.
As our business grew, we formed Balance Studio in Seattle, Washington, home to not only Bahia in Motion, but also a host of committed teachers and practitioners who provide dance, yoga, massage, acupuncture, and meditation to our community. In time, we formed a dance company and began collaborating with local arts organizations.
Bahia in Motion and Balance Studio were built on our belief that individuals and families thrive when they feel healthy, engaged and part of something larger than themselves, including cultures outside their own. We encourage people to find joy within themselves and transform life’s challenges through movement and the power of human connection.
As small business owners we knew there would be hard times, but never imagined something as challenging as COVID-19. To keep our community safe, we quickly transitioned to online classes. In hopes of surviving financially, we applied for several grants and loans and are grateful to have been approved for a small Federal loan covering the salary of one employee and a fraction of our rent and utilities.
Unfortunately, the assistance we received isn’t enough to sustain our business and we need your help raising $12,000 to cover costs incurred from April through August, when we hope to once again host in-person classes and embrace our incredible community. The funds will cover rent, utilities and maintenance. Our goal is to raise these funds by July 1st, 2020.
Our business is named after Daniel’s home, the state of Bahia, Brazil, a place that carries a long history of disparity and racial inequality. Despite their many challenges, the people of Bahia demonstrate great resilience. With your help, we believe Bahia in Motion will also be resilient and will survive this time.
We also believe this global pandemic will provide us with a deeper understanding of our connection and move us toward healthier communities and a healthier world. We truly hope Bahia In Motion and Balance Studio can continue to be part of this change.
