In late November my Dad, Brian McIntyre, had a devastating accident in Trang, Thailand. He was riding a motorcycle when he was suddenly struck by another motorcycle carrying a young couple. The impact caused him to fly off his Motorcycle, striking his head on a cement barrier. Although he was wearing a helmet (thank God ! it saved his life!) he received debilitating head injuries. He has bleeding and swelling of the brain and has spent the last three weeks in intensive care in a hospital in Thailand.
He has been released (because he was unable to pay) but is not able to care for himself. He struggles to speak, grasping at words and hoping they make sense (most often they do not.) He has extremely limited mobility and cannot attend to his most basic needs. He does not recall his own house, dog, or many of his friends and acquaintances.
He had no insurance and is left with overwhelming medical bills, and no way to pay for ongoing care. I am doing the best I can to find out as much as I can from my home on Gabriola Island in British Columbia, Canada. Language is a barrier; funds are a major barrier as well.
My Dad needs ongoing care and rehabilitation to regain as much function as possible. I also need to go to Thailand to do what I can and see if we can get him on an airplane back to British Columbia. It appears he will need rehab to even get to that stage. If I can get him home he will not have medical coverage for the first three months after his return to Canada.
I am reaching out to ask for help. I am not the type of person to do so. Like my Dad, I am staunchly proud and self-sufficient. But I am limited in my resources and my Dad’s needs are sudden , urgent and life changing. Failure to deal with rehab usually means the brain injuries will be more permanent. The critical time is now and it is not about me; so I am asking for whatever help you can to contribute to this urgent task I face.
