Help Kai Beat Leukemia!

Donation protected
Our dear friends, the Wright Family, have been hit with devastating news. Kai has been diagnosed with Mixed Phenotype Acute Leukemia (M-PAL). It’s a very rare and serious type with a long, hard road ahead for treatment. Doctors estimate that it will be at least a year of treatment (various rounds of chemo therapy and a bone marrow transplant). His wife, Tasha, and I worked together with students with special needs for a couple years and is how we met. We have become friends as well as business partners, embarking on buying a flower farm business together just over a year ago. As you can imagine our two families have become rather intertwined and this news has just rocked us all to the core. Kai and Tasha have been together for 20 years this November and are each other’s rocks. They are both so hard working and dedicated to their family; it’s a beautiful thing to behold. They have two amazing boys: Easton, 13 (14 in December) and Griffin, 7. Their boys are kind, hardworking, thoughtful, silly and talented and they both love them fiercely. The Wrights mean so much to us and many and we just have so much love for them....it will take a village to get them through this. They are typically the ones giving, giving, giving and doing, doing, doing for others. They have been so generous to our family and others we want to give back to them in this time of absolute need and why we have set up this page on their behalf to collect donations. They didn’t dream of asking for help, but we know many people want to show their support and do what they can in this time of feeling utterly helpless. Even if you don’t know them...they are such good people and in such an unfair situation; please offer what you can. Unfortunately, Kai had to be flown to Oahu for tests and treatment; meaning that not only are the medical expenses astronomical, travel expenses so his own wife and children can see and support him will also be a burden. He will be on Oahu for the foreseeable future for his chemotherapy treatment and ultimately moved to the mainland to live in a sterile community for at least 6 months once he can get a bone marrow transplant as his immune system will be extremely fragile (fingers crossed for a finding a match!!). At this time, Kai is receiving his first round of chemo and updates will be posted and provided as they are available so you can see how your monetary support is helping him fight this and getting him and his family through this. Obviously, Kai is not able to work at his position with the County of Maui at this time and as mentioned this process will take at least a year. Tasha has been saddled with being the sole provider but the time needed to travel back and forth from Oahu to support Kai and communicate with doctors regarding progress and treatment plans, attend to the needs of their boys at home and school and running the household...being at the farm when and if she can on the cusp of the busiest season of the year may be impossible. At this time the family will remain on Maui as things continue to get figured out and finish the semester at school, but no family should have to choose whether or not they can go see and support their dad/husband over their meals or paying bills. This is no easy feat...between the treatment and the complications of living on an island with limited medical facilities...any assistance you can provide would be received with much gratitude! Please consider giving any monetary donation you possibly can to this family...it all adds up and no amount is too small during this incredible hardship. Funds will he used to offset medical expenses, medical travel expenses for the family, and loss of wages. Mahalo nui loa, many blessings, and much Aloha to you. -Emily & Dan Church P.S.
