Help June train as a birth and postpartum doula!

***I bumped up the goal to cover the books I'll need to purchase during my training and mentorship year.***

Ever since learning about the fatal maternal mortality rates for Black women in America, I have been restless. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention , African-American, Native American and Alaska Native women are about three times more likely to die from causes related to pregnancy, compared to white women in the United States. The fact is: too many women are dying largely preventable deaths associated with their pregnancy.  And racial bias within the healthcare system is contributing to the high numbers of pregnancy related deaths and complications among minority women. If high-profile celebrities like Beyoncé and Serena Williams are not immune to racial injustice and misogynoir within our healthcare systems, what about poor, working class, marginalized, incarcerated, undocumented, trans women who may not have access to those resources?

Over the course of the last year, I've been thinking and wondering: what can I do? I felt powerless just sitting back, knowing that hundreds of Black women and women of color could die this year due to inadequate care.

And so I've decided to train as a birth doula.

According to the American Pregnancy Association "A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. The doula's purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience."

This is where you come in!

I've signed up for a training class in San Francisco: a Culturally Diverse Birthkeeper Training for POC Birthworkers. This class costs $800. As a low-income, queer, working class Black woman/college student with no family support, that is a lot of money.  But with your help, I could attend these courses and start the life-changing work of helping and supporting moms of color to have safe deliveries.

Can you help me reach my goal?

Thank you for making it this far. Any and all support is appreciated.

Love and healing,
June
