Help Julissa go to Cuba

Donation protected
My name is Julissa Martinez. I am an Afro-Latina from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

I am currently an Education major with a double minor in Latino/a Studies and Sociology at Ithaca College. My long-term goal is to be a Latino/a Studies teacher for middle school or high school because Latino/a Studies is something I feel is left out within our education system up until you go to college. I am passionate about social justice issues and I’m always an advocate and activist for human rights, gender equality, women empowerment and Black Lives Matter.

I have been accepted into the study abroad program, Arts and Culture in Cuba. Here's a brief description of the program which is also found on Ithaca College website http://www.ithaca.edu/intercom/article.php?story=20161106233303538#.WEsk4dUrLIU:

"The program, Arts, and Culture in Cuba, will provide students an intimate look into Cuba in the midst of the current transition through the lens of art, music, dance, literature, and film, among other areas. Through local dancers, musicians, filmmakers and artist, students will gain first-hand knowledge of Cuban culture as well as their life experiences in a changing Cuba. The program would also be cross-disciplinary and we will be discussing how art and politics intersect and what role art has in the changing Cuba."

This trip will allow me connect with the Black diaspora and learn how people live at the intersection of Black and Latino/a in a different cultural context. I will be able to build my cross-cultural communication skills and learn how to bring art into the classroom, which will help develop my teaching goals. Additionally, this educational trip will provide me with an understanding of the diverse cultures in Latino/a America to fulfill my Latino/a Studies minor and be able to implement my experiences and understandings in my future classrooms.

I come from a working-class background, so my parents are unable to help me cover the costs to participate in this amazing opportunity. Next semester, I will be working two jobs to be able to pay for this program. I am proposing $3,500 with a $500 deposit due on Monday, December 12, to be able to cover the costs of the trip, which includes airfare, hotel accommodations, local expenses, and food. All funding will be used directly for this program.

If you are interested in learning more about this course you can contact my, Professor Enriquez Gonzalez-Conty.

Your contribution will be greatly appreciated.

Muchisimas gracias por ayudarme a dar un paso más cerca para cumplir mis sueños. (Thank you so much for helping me get one step closer to my dreams.)
