Help Jep recover from his scooter accident

Donation protected
Hi everyone, as some of you may, or may not know; my mum & dad were involved in a scooter accident whilst on holiday in Zante on the 27th July.

The scooter was only travelling at around 20-25 mph when dad took a sweeping bend, but the front end tucked and back tyre skidded out with no warning or time to react, causing both him, and my mum who was on the back, to come off and onto the road.

Mum was fortunate to be left with just scrapes and bruises, but dad has broken several ribs, fractured his scapula and punctured his lung, resulting in subcutaneous emphysema.

Although this accident could have been fatal, thankfully two paramedics who were on holiday drove by at the right time and took them to the hospital immediately as he could not wait for an ambulance. In the back of their small car en route to the hospital (at the total other side of the island) his neck and face swelled up causing a strangling effect, so with this, the broken ribs and punctured lung his breathing became extremely difficult and the two paramedics were becoming increasingly concerned. Upon arrival he was straight in for a CT scan, x-rays and a drain inserted for his lung, which is still in situ.

Whilst my dad is currently in hospital receiving treatment, he has been informed that he will not be able to fly for a period of at least three weeks. After this time has elapsed the risk is still high if he was to fly home due to the nature of his injuries.

My mum has remained with him, because nursing staff in Greece don't take on as much responsibility as nurses in the UK, and in Greece it is considered normal practice for relatives and friends to carry out basic housekeeping for the patient.

Although they did take out a travel insurance policy to protect themselves for up to £15million when unthinkable accidents such as this occur, it has since transcended that on page 81 of the 86 page insurance policy agreement that cover is only valid on bikes upto 125cc and the bike that was rented was a 200cc. After further investigation it seems as though this is the case with all companies offering travel insurance - though of all my dad's friends (into bikes) that he's asked about this policy in the days since, not a single person has ever been aware of it! So be warned to only ever rent a 125cc at most and check your policy documents for bike-specific wording!!

In dad's words, he "doesn't want to be a charity case" but my parents now face the unexpected expenditure of an unknown amount as they will now need to cover the cost of mum's accomodation and travel expenses to and from the hospital (18km each way) whilst dad recovers, along with their transport back home once he is well enough to travel. Oh, and the cost of bananas for my dad too, to go with the hospital provided custard that he's currently eating for his breakfast!

The main point they want to make as a result of this is to make everyone aware of the insurance small print when hiring bikes abroad. As although you may have a full motorcycle license and can ride ANY size bike (as dad has since 1983) it means nothing, please read the small print on your policies before considering hiring a bike abroad.

The doctor did recommend that dad needs an air ambulance to get back home for the small sum of £36,000 to be transferred to a local hospital! Their policy covered them up to £15 million in medical expenses and repatriation, but is now void due to the size of the engine on the bike. It is also of note that this was not the most basic of policies offered but was a First Class insurance policy taken out for this very reason...

Any monies donated would be greatly appreciated to help them along whilst my dad recovers.

All surplus funds to what they require they would like to donate to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, who attend bad motorcycle accidents as part of their services.

Thank you ❤️
