Help Jean Get Back On Two Feet

My Aunt, Jean Comisse, is a remarkable person - ask anyone who knows her. Despite suffering the death of her first son when he was only five years old from a brain tumor and then having to unexpectedly raise her second as a single mother, Jean continually strives to spread joy everywhere she goes. She devoted five years following the loss of her son to organizing fundraisers to benefit The Rainbow Foundation for Brain Tumor Research. She's never without a kind smile or an optimistic word. She enjoys musicals, classic rock, and has an affinity for lighthouses. She is resilient, independent, and tender-hearted. But the last month has left her facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge.

Only months after unexpectedly losing her mother - with whom she'd always been especially close - in early 2017, Jean was diagnosed with a lung disease - rare, progressive, and incurable. Then, in December, just as she was beginning to wrap her mind around adjusting to this new normal, a pain in her leg brought her to the doctor, and then to the ER. There she was diagnosed with a 100% blockage in her abdominal aorta, which had thrown two blood clots - one to her left kidney and one to her right leg. Two surgeries - one planned, 4 hours, and another unplanned, 7 hours late into the same night, resolved the issue in her abdomen. She was stable, her left kidney functioning at 30% and the pulse in her right foot present but weak. Due to her lung condition, she remained on a ventilator for three days. Just as all appeared to be on the mend, the need for two more emergency surgeries arose - four now, all in a single week - culminating in the inability to save her right foot. Jean spent both Christmas and New Year's in intensive care, now an amputee.

Now, Jean faces ever-growing medical bills along with the unexpected need to rapidly adjust her life yet again and adapt to the lifestyle of an amputee. Hospital fees, rehab, prosthetics and prosthetic training, and more come with a hefty price tag. Beyond such unthinkably high medical costs, the apartment she's lived in for over a decade is not handicapped-accessible, and so she now finds herself in need of new housing, quickly, at costs she hadn't even considered before.
