Jason Nelson is and has been a compassionate, positive, and loving spiritual leader to countless family members, friends, students and strangers throughout his life.
In early March Jason developed flu-like symptoms. As the week went on, he become more lethargic and ultimately unresponsive. On Friday March 12th, his wife Nancy called 911 and he was taken to their local hospital. That same evening he was taken by ambulance to the ICU at Meriter Hospital in Madison, WI. It was at Meriter where they discovered Jason had developed a severe infection in his heart called endocarditis. This infection spread to many areas of his body, including his brain.
He was then transferred to UW Hospital in Madison, WI for open heart surgery and aortic valve replacement. His heart surgery on March 23rd ended up being 16 hours and was much more extensive than they originally thought. He has since been in the cardiac ICU at UW hospital.
He has developed many complications and life threatening events during his stay. He is suffering from acute kidney injury and is requiring dialysis. He developed pneumonia and continues to require some respiratory support. Most complicating to his recovery has been severe, recurrent gastrointestinal ulcers that have caused significant bleeding several times. He has had many procedures to try to stop these bleeds.
His body is severely deconditioned and will require extensive rehabilitation, and although improving his neurologic and cognitive function will also require intensive ongoing therapy.
He remains hospitalized at this time, with many body systems requiring support and ongoing medical management. Daily updates regarding Jason’s story can be found at: Jason CaringBridge.
Jason has dedicated his life to serving his Lord and Savior, and with the assistance of Time of Grace Ministries, we have compiled a compilation of Jason's Grace Moments devotions as an ebook we are proud to share with you: Volume Omega
