Hello, as many of you know my best friend, Janina Clark, was diagnosed with Stage 2A, (grade 3, fast spreading) breast cancer back in April this year.
The past 7 months have been a whirl wind for her and her family. The adjustments made by her and her family to accommodate the sudden changes have been drastic and plentiful. She was put off work in May and has been, and will remain unable to return in the foreseeable future.
She received a double mastectomy on May 15th where they also took lymphnodes for testing to see how its spread. (5 taken from the left and one from the right, resulting in 3/6 testing positive for cancer) After surgery there were scans and tests done to evaluate treatment plans where they also found 2 spots in her lungs.
She began her Chemotherapy treatments in July, going once every three weeks. She has completed chemo and has moved on to the next stage in treatment. The next stage includes radiation every day (sans weekends) for 5 weeks, and traztuzumab once every 3 weeks. She will also be starting treatment to help "turn off" her ovaries to help avoid any spreading that may occur.
As I'm sure you can guess, times have been hard for my dear friend and her family. On top of her physical and emotional struggles have been many financial hardships. Between traveling from her family home near Southy Sk to Regina for all her treatments and appointments, not being able to return to work yet, and medication costs, average living costs are becoming hard to maintain. She was on EI when she was first put off work, however that only lasts for 15 weeks and that time has come and gone.
We may not be able to take the pain and loss away from our dear friend and loved one, but maybe, together, we can take away some of the stress she is carrying financially. A little bit from each of us, can go a far way in helping her in the next step of her journey.
