Help Bring Integrative Medicine to Fire Evacuees

Donation protected
On Wednesday October 23rd, 2019, the Kincade Fire started in Geyserville, CA. Now, 3 days later, the fire has spread to over 25,000 acres and is only 10% contained. About 87,000 people have been ordered to evacuate and several tens of thousands more are in evacuation warnings. This all comes just over 2 years after the 2017 Santa Rosa fires and the 2018 Chico fires, which each devastated the areas.

Integrative Healers Action Network (IHAN) was established during the 2017 wildfires in Sonoma County, and has since responded to several disasters throughout the state of California. It is the goal of IHAN to provide the structure and resources needed to provide safe, sustainable, and effective community care through integrative healing modalities including but not limited to: naturopathic medicine, chiropractic, acupuncture and Chinese medicine, massage therapy, craniosacral therapy, health coaching, and herbal medicine. In early 2019, we established a community partnership with the American Red Cross to provide this care in impacted communities throughout California.

What is Integrative Medicine and how does it help fire evacuees?

Integrative medicine is an approach to care that puts the patient at the center and addresses the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect a person's health. IHAN’s approach to working with individuals experiencing trauma during a natural disaster moves beyond the conventional model to physical and mental health that is already offered in the Red Cross shelters. Our focus is to relieve the different ways that acute trauma can manifest in individuals, often through physical pain, stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Our team of volunteer Integrative Medicine and Health practitioners have a wide variety of skills and tools to offer support in these situations that can provide almost immediate relief in calming a person's nervous system and helping them feel safe in their body after they have had to evacuate their homes, sometimes at very short notice. Our clinics offer massage therapy, acupuncture, other types of bodywork, naturopathic medicine, homeopathic remedies, and other herbal tea and supplements to calm the nervous system, relieve pain, and offer lung support to those who have been exposed to toxic smoke.

Some testimonials from our Integrative Health Clinic at the Red Cross Shelter in Healdsburg for Kincade Fire Evacuees. 100% of the evacuees we served were from the Latinx community.

"I've never had acupuncture so I was a bit nervous but it was calming and relaxing. I really like it and I am happy I tried something new" - Elizabeth

"When I came in, the whole left side of my body hurt, especially my upper back and hip. I clean houses so this has been an issue for awhile. I feel much better and relaxed now. I will come back tomorrow" - Maria Teresa
