Stronger Together: Help Andrew fight cancer

We’re Stronger Together:  Let’s rally around the Evatts as Andrew fights stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma!

This is Andrew.

 He’s a six-year-old kindergarten student.

He’s Laine and Drew’s oldest son.

He’s a great big brother.

On the evening of Friday, April 23rd, Drew took Andrew to the emergency department  of their local hospital with complaints of back pain and a high fever.   Andrew was transferred by ambulance to Cleveland Clinic Children’s where he was admitted as a patient.  Doctors began extensive testing and found a large tumor in Andrew’s chest.

Late on Friday evening, April 30th, doctors gave Laine and Drew the devastating news that Andrew has stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma.

Chemotherapy began on Monday, May 3rd.  This marks the beginning of what will be at least an 18-month-long aggressive course of treatment.  Treatment will likely include chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, two stem cell transplants, MIBG therapy and immunotherapy.

Thankfully, Andrew is a fighter!

This diagnosis is challenging, but we are thankful that there are treatment options available and we have every reason to believe Andrew will have a successful outcome.  This week, Laine and Drew will take Andrew for a second opinion to confirm the diagnosis and refine his treatment plan.

The Evatts will need our support throughout this long and difficult journey.   Laine has taken a leave of absence from her job as a physical therapist, which obviously has financial implications for their family.   Drew will continue teaching high school;  his colleagues have generously donated leave time that has been banked for him to use as needed.

Our financial support will alleviate some of the financial burdens that come with extensive, long-term cancer treatment.   Contributions will be used  to off-set lost income and to cover some of the many expenses the Evatts  will face in the next 18+ months .  This will include medical costs, daycare expenses for their younger children, and many other things like gas and hospital parking fees. At least some of Andrew’s treatment will require extended hospital stays away from Cleveland, and contributions will also supplement the cost of travel.

We appreciate all the support as the Evatt family begins this journey.   There are certainly challenges on the road ahead but, by working together,  we have the opportunity to lighten their load.

Please continue to keep Andrew, his parents, and his brother and sister in your prayers.

We’re stronger together, and we’re so grateful for your support!
