Help homeless living in car sleep in safe place

Bev and Brenda here. We're raising money for a safe parking program for homeless people living in their cars in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The program was started by Wise Women Gathering Place in June, 2020 and more than 300 people have parked there overnight for safety since then. Individuals, couples, moms with their children, grandparent and grandchildren, and different variations of those groups have needed the safety of the lot. Many of them have jobs and still can't afford rent or can't get an apartment. On average, 18 cars with a total of 30 people come each night to sleep without worrying about being harassed or chased away from a residential area or business parking lot in the middle of the night.

 

The number of people in Green Bay living in their vehicle exposes the need for living wages and affordable long-term or permanent homes. The number of people using the safe parking program increased in September, 2021, just one repercussion of Wisconsin ending it's eviction moratorium. Staying on the lot includes access to portable toilets and hand washing stations, drinking water, and a place to dispose of garbage. Staff from Wise Women Gathering Place and other local housing agencies help the people who use the program connect to other resources and get on the list for stable, long-term housing options. An on-site staff person monitors the lot to keep the it safe for everyone.
