Hog Watch Manitoba is a coalition of volunteers who are working to stop the harms of industrialized pig production and support the development of smaller, more humane methods of raising pigs that do not pollute the water and air and treat both the animals and the workers more respectfully.
Can you imagine waking up gagging in the middle of the night to an unbearable stench wafting through your open windows? Or having your dream wedding ruined because the wind has shifted and your country venue has been overwhelmed by the putrid smell of hog manure. Sadly, this scenario has repeated itself too many times in rural Manitoba over the last 25 years.
Many rural residents have suffered harm from the sometimes toxic air being emitted from the hog barns as well as from the manure lagoons. Hog Watch Manitoba is raising funds to purchase an air monitoring device that will measure levels of hydrogen sulphide and ammonia present in the air emanating from these barns and lagoons. Concrete data documenting these noxious odours will help us to put a stop to these practices. Your financial contribution will help us to purchase a proper, accredited air monitor device that will put an end to the idea that the odours emanating from hog barns and spread fields are simply a nuisance. They are a significant threat to human health and something no one should have to live with routinely.
Thank you for any contribution you are able to make.
